The Underwear Rule

A good way to make children more defensible, is to teach them where they can be touched and by who. The Underwear Rule by The Council of Europe is an effective way to teach it to children. They have made a story about Kiko and The Hand. The Hand asks where Kiko can be touched. For example the face, the hands... are okay. When The Hand asks about where the underwear is, Kiko gets mad. He can't be touched there, by nobody.

In this way children learn that they are the boss of their own body and they can decide if they want to be touched or not. For a child it is difficult to know the difference between good and bad touching. The story shows them it is not okay if someone asks about the parts underneath their underwear. It is also not okay if someone asks or shows something of their private parts. It is also important to tell the children that sometimes somebody need to look at that parts, but it is only okay if for example a doctor in a hospital does that. In other cases they need to say 'no' against that.

It is important that children get this message in an innocent, but effective way. This can be done by the teachers to read the story in their classes with the children and talk about this subject with them.
